Dreams Cancun Launches New Mobile Site

We just got an email from Apple Vacations featuring a new and very innovative Mobile Concierge Website focused on Dreams Cancun.

Dreams Cancun Mobile Concierge SiteThe new Mobile Concierge site allows you to research resort information, available spa services, local Cancun information and more – all at your fingertips while lounging under your Cabana!

As of this writing, I have not been able to do an on-site Wi-Fi connectivity test so if you are reading this and you have been or are going soon, please share with us how well the connection is. You can also access Dreams Cancun’s Mobile Concierge site using your wireless carriers data plan, but that can be pricey. Please check with your carrier on applicable rates.

On the main page of the Mobile Concierge Site, you can request a room upgrade. The nice feature on this, is Dreams Cancun asks you where you can be located in the resort area to confirm the upgrade.

Dreams Cancun Small Beach Palapas

You can find us at the middle palapa closest to water on the small beach (grin).

On the Food and Beverage tab, you can learn more about the available dining options, dress codes, hours of operation, and have a look at the menu’s. We like the Shrimp and Scallop Skewers at Himitsu, the Japanese Restaurant!

We also like the 24 hour Room Service feature that you can order off the Mobile Concierge site. Because really, if you are on your patio, who really wants to get up and walk over to the phone when the sun is just right and you are overlooking the Delphinus Dolphin experience.

You also have a bit of information on the Bars and their themes on the site.

Many of the most popular excursions are also listed along with pricing through the link to Amstar’s Mobile Site..

imageNightlife is also featured and on top of the list is one of our favorites, Coco Bongo. At roughly 300 yards away, Coco Bongo is a must see if you enjoy great nightlife combined with a Las Vegas styled high energy show.

There is also a very handy, updated daily activity schedule on the Mobile Concierge Site. Dont miss the Beach Volleyball in the Lagoon area at 11:00am! Speaking of daily schedules, you also have the Explorers Club for kids schedule updated daily and available at your fingertips. How about the Giant Snakes and Ladders Game at 4:00pm in the Explorers Club.

One feature that is sure to be used frequently, is the Pevonia Spa Experience.  From this tab, you can view and book available spa treatments. You must book these packages 24 hours in advance but how nice to have a feature where you can book your Mani-Pedi right from your lounger at poolside!

One more very nice feature, is Dreams Connect. This feature allows you to communicate while at the resort using the free Wi-Fi service. Dreams Connect includes services like SMS text messaging to home, a Group Chat feature that's password protected which is great for meetings, and access to Twitter.

Another wonderful feature is the ability to book a candelight dinner right on the Mobile Concierge site. You need to make these at least 8 hours in advance and report to the Concierge 2 hours prior to re-confirm your dinner. You also have the ability to keep the dinner a surprise if you like. You are also able to select from 5 different locations at the resort. We like the Dock location out on the water!

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Airport Improvement Project Begins

After years of waiting, the day finally arrived Monday, July 12, when dignitaries and local community leaders gathered to celebrate the ground breaking for the expansion of the Providenciales International Airport.

airportgroundbreakingNot even the impressive downpouring of rain could dampen the spirits of those in attendance who believe the extension is a sign of better things to come for the country currently feeling a major financial squeeze.

“This morning we assemble here to mark a major milestone in preparing the Turks and Caicos Islands for recovery in the global economy,” said Acting Governor Mark Capes.

Phase one of the airport expansion project is now underway, with the primary focus of extending the runway from its current 7,600 feet to a length of 9,200 feet. This extension is expected to facilitate new long-haul flights from Europe and Asia to the TCI, allowing for planes such as the Boeing 777 and 747 to land at the airport.

Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association CEO Caesar Campbell, who also addressed attendees, said they were already in talks with a carrier who is interested in adding the TCI to its routes.

“The construction of the new runway is an important step towards creating a modern, safe and efficient international gateway that will enhance the appeal and competitiveness of the TCI,” said Capes.

“Economic success in the TCI will critically depend on our ability to grow and diversify our tourist base in a competitive global marketplace. Some forecasters suggest tourist arrivals in the region could grow by around 4 percent each year. There are already encouraging signs that visitor numbers are rebounding, and we must be ready to consolidate and build on this.

“So it is vital that we should have the modern infrastructure and services we need to compete effectively for international tourism and to attract a wider variety of visitors. This in turn will help fill our resorts and create more business opportunities in leisure, retailing and other service sectors.”

In addition to the long-term potential offered by the airport runway project, Capes said there are also early benefits for the TCI.

“It will inject several million dollars directly into the economy, safeguarding many local jobs during this difficult period of economic recession that confronts the region,” he said.

Taking on the one-year project, weather permitting, is Dexter Construction, a Canadian firm who will work together with local partner Cove Construction. As part of the contract with the government, Dexter is required to have a minimum of 70 percent local involvement and adds a mechanism is already in place through the TCIAA to ensure this standard is adhered to.

Dexter will also be establishing a scholarship programme for a number of Belongers working on this project who will have a first-class opportunity to study at training facilities in Canada. This will help to bring on young local talent and build a skilled indigenous workforce, ready to contribute to the future of this country, according to Capes.

TCI Airport Authority CEO John Smith said the public can expect a safe, efficient, world class facility at the end of the project.

While there was clearly much enthusiasm about the start of the project, Smith also warned their will be some patience required by the travelling public.

The new terminal and parking will only come in phase two of the project, which Smith says will only start towards the completion of phase one.

However, some renovations have already been undertaken in the current airport facility, such as improving the air conditioning system. Smith says they will also be taking on some other minor projects to de-clutter as well as put some new procedures in place to fast track entry into the country.

SANDALS RESORTS CONTINUES SANDALS GIVES BACK FUNDRAISING PROGRAM FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

Caribbean’s Leading Resort Company Aligns with Local Travel Agents to Assist Organizations in Raising Money.

No stranger to community-based and charitable organizations, Sandals Resorts, along with sister-brands Beaches Resorts, The Royal Plantation Collection and Grand Pineapple Beach Resorts, is proud to announce the re-launch of the highly successful Sandals Gives Back fundraising program.  Now in its second year, the program offers fundraising groups in the United States and Canada the opportunity to receive donations for their cause by joining forces with their favorite Sandals Resorts travel agents.

Between October 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011, organizations will have the exclusive opportunity to team up with dedicated Sandals Resorts travel agents during their next fundraising season to earn up to $250 in donations for each vacation package sold through their group.  For any vacation booked to a Sandals Resort, Beaches Resort, Royal Plantation Collection member or Grand Pineapple Beach Resort as a result of the organization’s referral or outreach, the travel agent will donate $100 directly to the organization’s efforts.

To raise additional funds, groups can also invite their dedicated travel agent to host a Sandals Caribbean Night or set up a managed table display during their next fundraising event.  For each resulting booking to a Sandals Resort or Beaches Resort made within 10 days of this event, Sandals will make a supplementary $150 donation per booking to the organization.

Associations and organizations can work with their Sandals Resorts-dedicated travel agent to put together a successful campaign and promote their fundraiser program throughout the community with flyers, posters, ads and online banners and web pages.  To qualify, the travel agent must sign an agreement with their Business Development Manager, and vacation packages must be booked between October 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011 for completed travel by January 31, 2012.

For more information about the Sandals Gives Back fundraising program contact Mark at Island Breeze Travel.

Norwegian Cruise Line Sets New Partnership with Nickelodeon

Norwegian Cruise Line announced a new partnership with Nickelodeon in which select Norwegian ships will feature Nickelodeon-themed family entertainment and programming all year long.
Beginning in April on Norwegian Jewel and this summer on Norwegian Epic, Nickelodeon and Norwegian experiences for the entire family will include character meet and greets, interactive game shows, character breakfasts and tuck-ins for kids. The three-year partnership also includes select specialty Nickelodeon-themed cruises each year, featuring Nickelodeon TV stars, show premieres and continuous themed-entertainment on the ship.

"Nickelodeon is an incredible family brand that is well known to kids and parents of all ages," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian's chief executive officer. "Combining its worldwide appeal with our signature Freestyle Cruising will create the ultimate experience at sea for families. For any family considering a cruise vacation, there is no better value and experience than Nickelodeon at Sea on Norwegian Cruise Line."

"At a time when families are seeking special travel experiences, we see an opportunity to build on the success of our previous Nickelodeon cruises to create a unique family cruise vacation experience with Norwegian Cruise Line," said Howard Smith, executive vice president, Nickelodeon Recreation.

"By partnering with Norwegian, we are now able to offer families Nickelodeon entertainment and programming at sea all year long."

Nickelodeon at Sea will launch on Norwegian Jewel when the ship begins sailing from New York in late April, and on Norwegian's latest addition to its fleet -- Norwegian Epic -- when she launches in July.

Each cruise will feature live Nickelodeon-themed interactive shows, including "SlimeTime LIVE!" with Nick's signature slime; "Nick Live! Poolside" entertainment, character breakfasts and meet and greets, Nick-themed dance parties, and more. Nickelodeon-themed elements will also be incorporated into Norwegian's Kids' Crew program.

In addition to the year-round programming on Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Epic, special Nickelodeon-themed cruises will be offered annually where families can immerse themselves in everything Nickelodeon all day, every day.

These unique cruises will include special appearances by the network's live talent, show premieres, more live game shows, and more opportunities to visit with kids' favorite Nick characters.

The first of the Nickelodeon-themed specialty cruises is scheduled on Norwegian Jewel later this year. For more information, call 800-327-7030 or visit www.ncl.com.

Cancun Airport Unveils New Runway, Control Tower Project

Island Breeze Travel of Michigan, a Certified Cancun Counselor, is happy to announce that the Cancun International Airport is unveiling its $67 million dollar investment, a second runway infrastructure project including the construction of an additional runway, entirely new control tower and taxiway bridge.

The airport's capacity will increase to be able to serve some 28 million passengers per year. The destination experiences a yearly increase in visitors.

In 2009, five airlines added Cancun to their flight schedules while other airlines, including American and Alaska Airlines, provide exceptionally low fares, creating demand for such an investment to accommodate visitors, especially during season.

Cancun's International Airport will become Mexico's first to have the capacity to handle simultaneous takeoffs and landings on two runways.

The control tower, more than 315 feet tall, will be among the 20 tallest in the world, allowing improved efficiency in runway-use time assigned to aircrafts, beneficial to both passengers and almost the 150 domestic and international airlines.

On the digital front, the company has established a stand-alone website, www.marthastewartweddings.com, with wedding planning tools powered by WeddingWire, a localized wedding platform in which MSLO made a strategic investment in 2008.

Also in 2008, MSLO took an equity stake in www.pingg.com, an online invitation and planning company. In November 2009, Martha Stewart Weddings magazine will publish its first destination weddings special issue magazine.

In addition to Martha Stewart Weddings at Sandals Resorts, MSLO and SRI will introduce a variety of craft programs and camps in 2010. Guests will be taught crafting skills and techniques by trained experts using Martha Stewart Crafts products (www.marthastewart.com/crafts). MSLO’s crafts products are manufactured by EK Success, which distributes the products to mass market and specialty craft retailers nationwide. Modern Bride Names Jamaica as Top Honeymoon Destination

For the 13th consecutive year, Jamaica has been named to Modern Bride’s “The World’s 50 Best Honeymoons” list from the annual survey of Virtuoso travel specialists.

Jamaica also ranked in the “Top 10 for Affordability,” at number 3, a desirable spot in today’s economy. Jamaica’s listings are published in Modern Bride’s August/September issue, now available on newsstands. The survey represents an expert polling of a panel of 6,000 Virtuoso travel specialists across the U.S. and is designed to help couples select the ideal honeymoon destination.

Agents recommended destinations based on the following 12 categories: romance, beaches, food and wine, mountains, sexy ambience, adventure, nightlife, affordability, seclusion, culture, snorkeling and diving, and up-and-coming locale.
