Department of Tourism Launches St. Croix Fantastic Flight Offer

The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism has re-introduced its St. Croix Fantastic Flight promotion, offering a rich booking incentive for U.S. travelers to enjoy a St. Croix vacation this summer.

Travelers who book the St. Croix Fantastic Flight promotion receive a $500 instant rebate on bookings of six nights or more, including the first night free at participating hotels plus credits toward dining, activities and shopping representing a total value of $700 in savings. The offer runs through May 12, 2011 for travel to St. Croix between June 10, 2011 and August 31, 2011.

In addition, two daily, non-stop American Airlines Boeing 737 flights will operate between Miami and St. Croix beginning June 10, 2011, offering travelers increased options for summer travel to St. Croix.

Bahamas’ Sandals Emerald Bay to Add 66 Rooms in Anniversary Renovation

Sandals Emerald Bay in Great Exuma, Bahamas, is adding 66 rooms as part of a $1 million renovation and upgrade to the resort’s golf course and dining options to celebrate the resort’s first anniversary. The new rooms and enhancements will debut on April 15.

The new accommodations include 18 new suites offering butler service, courtesy of Sandals Resorts’ partnership with the Guild of Professional English Butlers, and are available for booking immediately. In all, Sandals Emerald Bay will offer four new suite types, plus additional rooms in several other categories, creating a total of 249 rooms across the property by the end of May.

The new suites will be located in the Seaside Villa’s and include a Colossal Penthouse Constellation suite, with views overlooking the beach; a Colossal Beachfront Walkout Constellation suite, with a separate living area and direct access to the beach via a private outdoor patio; a Coco Plum Penthouse Grande Luxe Beachfront suite, offering an oversized room with a four-poster bed, modern décor with silver and blue accents and spectacular views; and a Coco Plum Grande Luxe Beachfront Walkout suite, with a grand room with mahogany furnishings and large patio com with beach access.

The enhancement will include a large-scale renovation of the Greg Norman-designed Sandals Emerald Reef Golf Club, including new maintenance equipment and irrigation system and a state-of-the-art Shark Shack Golf Lounge with new soft furnishings, interior seating area with poker table, a sandwich and coffee station and an outdoor deck featuring a barbeque pit. A new piazza offering traditional wood-fired pizzas al fresco will be added to the exterior of Dino’s Pizzeria. Sandals Emerald Bay will also debut Café de Paris, offering pastries, crepes, espresso drinks and gourmet coffees. Both additions will be completed by late spring 2011. Airlines begin new Turks & Caicos (PLS) flights

The Turks and Caicos Islands are about to become a lot more accessible with several new flights from the U.S. that started last week.

JetBlue’s sold out inaugural flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport touched down at the Providenciales International Airport on February 17th with 150 passengers on board.

The flight was greeted by the fire dept with an impressive water cannon salute. The captain then waved the TCI flag from the cockpit window, drawing cheers from the crowd of dignitaries and airport staff anxiously awaiting its arrival.

His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell and JetBlue executives who came in on the flight cut a ribbon at bottom of stairs, ushering in a new era of air service for the country.

JetBlue Chief Commercial Officer Robin Hayes said he was "so happy to be here" and said he expects much more to come, including JetBlue vacations, 100 of which have already been sold this year. The airline is also considering adding flights to Providenciales from Ft. Lauderdale, he said.

On Friday, Feb. 18, Continental brought its first flight to the TCI from Newark Liberty International Airport.

JetBlue also be landed a flight from Boston on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:45 p.m., making a total of eight flights per week for the low-cost U.S. carrier to the TCI.

The addition of these new flight makes a total of eight non-stop destinations from the U.S. to Providenciales, including Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, New York City, Newark and Philadelphia.

Currently two airlines, Air Canada and WestJet, service the TCI from Canada with several weekly direct flights from Toronto and Montreal. British Airways also offers weekly service to London’s Heathrow Airport via Nassau.

Air Turks & Caicos also offers direct international services to the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Haiti.

Currently more than 200 flights arrive and depart the airport weekly.

The TCI Airport Authority is in the process of redeveloping the airport to accommodate the increasing traffic, including lengthening of the runway. The new runway will allow for larger planes to arrive directly from Europe and other long-haul destinations. Phase two of the expansion planned for next year also includes a new modern airline terminal.

Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas becomes the first ship to dock at the new Falmouth Jamaica Port

After months of delays, Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas on Feb. 17 became the first ship to call at the Historic Falmouth port. Located between the cruise ports of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, Historic Falmouth is a thematic cruise port and gateway to more than 60 land experiences along the north coast of Jamaica.

“We are delighted to see Voyager of the Seas make the first-ever ship call at Historic Falmouth,” said Craig Milan, senior vice president of land operations for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “By partnering with the Port Authority of Jamaica, we are working to deliver our shared vision of Falmouth’s rebirth. Together, we are bringing the town’s historic sites to life and integrating the culture and authenticity of this destination into a superior guest experience.”

The grand opening celebrations will take place on March 22 when Oasis of the Seas makes its maiden call. Other Royal Caribbean ships that will call at Falmouth include Freedom of the Seas on Feb. 23, Navigator of the Seas on Feb. 24, and Allure of the Seas on March 30. Shore excursions from Falmouth include a visit to Good Hope Great House, an 18th century plantation, for a horse-and-carriage ride, river-tubing and ATV exploring; climbing Dunn’s River Falls; sampling rums at Appleton Estate; and river rafting on a 30-foot bamboo raft.

“Falmouth has an important place in the cultural history of Jamaica. It is especially rewarding for us to use that history as an entrée for a new generation of guests,” said Mike Henry, Jamaica’s minister of transport and works, who has responsibility for cruise shipping. “Our sights have always been set on being the pre-eminent cruise destination, and with the best-in-class berthing facilities at the Historic Falmouth port, we’ll now easily welcome the world’s largest ships.”

The revitalization of Historic Falmouth is a multi-phased development project with the first phase near completion; it offers a two-berth pier, retail and restaurant services, and a transportation center. Subsequent phases will include onsite attractions and experiences, hotel and residential developments, and additional retail and restaurant options. The town also has many prominent houses, shops and public buildings built in the 18th and 19th centuries that are still standing, but are in need of refurbishment. The restoration and preservation of several historic buildings in Falmouth is currently underway.

Falmouth was founded in 1790 from land owned by Edward Barrett. His granddaughter was poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. At that time Jamaica was the world’s leading sugar producer, and this was most evident in Falmouth with more than 80 sugar estates nearby. The town was mapped out in the Colonial tradition, with streets named after British royalty and heroes—King Street, Queen Street, Rodney Street (after 18th century naval leader Admiral Lord George Rodney) and Wellington Street (after Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington).

The density of historic Georgian architectural buildings, which residents have lived in and maintained, is reflective of the town’s heritage. Its public amenities included the first piped water supply system in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1799. The town prospered throughout the first half of the 19th century and was the birthplace of the abolition slavery movement. Falmouth was the site of many revolts, and many of the buildings in the town served as safe houses for those who had escaped. In fact, a prominent Falmouth reverend, William Knibb, whose house still stands in the town, was granted Jamaica’s highest civil honor, the Order of Merit, in 1988, 150 years after the abolition of slavery. Caribbean Airlines launches Antigua nonstop service from JFK

In anticipation of a strong rebound in travel demand from the United States this winter, tourism officials have announced that Caribbean Airlines will begin twice weekly non-stop service from John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport to Antigua and Barbuda.

The Caribbean Airlines service will begin on December 14th, on Tuesdays and Fridays, and is expected to boost last minute holiday bookings and assist returning nationals looking for last minute deals. Service will originate from Port of Spain to VC Bird International Airport and return service from New York's JFK.

Tourism Minister John Maginley has welcomed the prospect of additional air service to Antigua and Barbuda at a time when all signs point to an increase in travel from the United States.

"I am particularly pleased with the timing of this service, since it will facilitate smooth connections from almost all North American gateways as well as European markets such as France, Italy and Germany,” he said.

“This aligns with our strategic vision of providing greater access from some of our key markets."

Airline officials reported a steady increase in bookings since a fare sale was launched ahead of the start of the new service.

American to Launch Nonstop Dallas/Fort Worth-Barbados Service

American Airlines will begin new nonstop flight between Barbados and Dallas/Fort Worth beginning Dec. 16. Introductory rates start at $149 each way based on roundtrip travel. Flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Barbados operate every Monday, Thursday and Saturday with returning flights every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight will operate aboard Boeing 757 aircraft with 22 seats in Business Class and 166 seats in the Coach cabin.

Continental Adds Flights To Turks and Caicos (PLS)

Continental Airlines announced this week that it will begin non-stop flights between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and Providenciales on Feb. 18, subject to government approval.

Initially flights will operate four times a week — on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — converting to daily service on March 6.
“We are pleased to offer convenient access to Providenciales, a world-class getaway and an exciting new addition to the list of Caribbean destinations served by Continental and United,” said John Slater, United Airlines vice president of sales. “Our merger allows us to offer new flights to new destinations as we begin to efficiently utilize the combined fleet of both carriers.”

The approximately 3½-hour flight will depart Newark at 9:35 a.m. and arrive in Providenciales at 1:10 p.m. The return flight will depart Providenciales at 2:05 p.m. and arrive in Newark at 5:45 p.m.
Continental will use a Boeing 737-800 for the new service, with seating for 160 passengers — 16 in first class and 144 in economy.
"The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands welcomes the decision of Continental Airlines, a leading international airline, to operate nonstop flights between New York and Providenciales in time for winter travel," said government CEO Mark Capes, now serving as acting governor. Dreams Cancun Launches New Mobile Site

We just got an email from Apple Vacations featuring a new and very innovative Mobile Concierge Website focused on Dreams Cancun.

The new Mobile Concierge site allows you to research resort information, available spa services, local Cancun information and more – all at your fingertips while lounging under your Cabana!

As of this writing, I have not been able to do an on-site Wi-Fi connectivity test so if you are reading this and you have been or are going soon, please share with us how well the connection is. You can also access Dreams Cancun’s Mobile Concierge site using your wireless carriers data plan, but that can be pricey. Please check with your carrier on applicable rates.

On the main page of the Mobile Concierge Site, you can request a room upgrade. The nice feature on this, is Dreams Cancun asks you where you can be located in the resort area to confirm the upgrade.

You can find us at the middle palapa closest to water on the small beach (grin).

On the Food and Beverage tab, you can learn more about the available dining options, dress codes, hours of operation, and have a look at the menu’s. We like the Shrimp and Scallop Skewers at Himitsu, the Japanese Restaurant!

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Airport Improvement Project Begins

After years of waiting, the day finally arrived Monday, July 12, when dignitaries and local community leaders gathered to celebrate the ground breaking for the expansion of the Providenciales International Airport.

Not even the impressive downpouring of rain could dampen the spirits of those in attendance who believe the extension is a sign of better things to come for the country currently feeling a major financial squeeze.

“This morning we assemble here to mark a major milestone in preparing the Turks and Caicos Islands for recovery in the global economy,” said Acting Governor Mark Capes.

Phase one of the airport expansion project is now underway, with the primary focus of extending the runway from its current 7,600 feet to a length of 9,200 feet. This extension is expected to facilitate new long-haul flights from Europe and Asia to the TCI, allowing for planes such as the Boeing 777 and 747 to land at the airport.

Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association CEO Caesar Campbell, who also addressed attendees, said they were already in talks with a carrier who is interested in adding the TCI to its routes.

“The construction of the new runway is an important step towards creating a modern, safe and efficient international gateway that will enhance the appeal and competitiveness of the TCI,” said Capes.

“Economic success in the TCI will critically depend on our ability to grow and diversify our tourist base in a competitive global marketplace. Some forecasters suggest tourist arrivals in the region could grow by around 4 percent each year. There are already encouraging signs that visitor numbers are rebounding, and we must be ready to consolidate and build on this.

“So it is vital that we should have the modern infrastructure and services we need to compete effectively for international tourism and to attract a wider variety of visitors. This in turn will help fill our resorts and create more business opportunities in leisure, retailing and other service sectors.”

In addition to the long-term potential offered by the airport runway project, Capes said there are also early benefits for the TCI.

“It will inject several million dollars directly into the economy, safeguarding many local jobs during this difficult period of economic recession that confronts the region,” he said.

Taking on the one-year project, weather permitting, is Dexter Construction, a Canadian firm who will work together with local partner Cove Construction. As part of the contract with the government, Dexter is required to have a minimum of 70 percent local involvement and adds a mechanism is already in place through the TCIAA to ensure this standard is adhered to.

Dexter will also be establishing a scholarship programme for a number of Belongers working on this project who will have a first-class opportunity to study at training facilities in Canada. This will help to bring on young local talent and build a skilled indigenous workforce, ready to contribute to the future of this country, according to Capes.

TCI Airport Authority CEO John Smith said the public can expect a safe, efficient, world class facility at the end of the project.

While there was clearly much enthusiasm about the start of the project, Smith also warned their will be some patience required by the travelling public.

The new terminal and parking will only come in phase two of the project, which Smith says will only start towards the completion of phase one.

However, some renovations have already been undertaken in the current airport facility, such as improving the air conditioning system. Smith says they will also be taking on some other minor projects to de-clutter as well as put some new procedures in place to fast track entry into the country.

U.S., Barbados Reach Open-Skies Aviation Agreement

The United States and Barbados have reached an Open-Skies Agreement that will liberalize U.S.-Barbados air services for airlines of both countries.

Barbados will become the 99th U.S. Open-Skies partner. Once the agreement is signed, airlines from both countries will be allowed to select routes, destinations and prices for both passenger and cargo service based on consumer demand and market conditions.

For those of us who enjoy travel to Barbados, this is a very big deal and it should bring more competitive airlift to Barbados. In addition, watch for the Barbados Tourism Authority and resorts on the island to team up and offer special incentives for those who are considering a visit to Barbados.

The agreement, which was reached on July 1, for the first time provides airlines of both countries with code-sharing and intermodal rights.

The previous U.S.-Barbados air service agreement, signed in 1982, contained restrictions on the cities that carriers could serve and placed limits on charter operations. The new agreement will remove these restrictions and provide important enhanced cargo rights.

Wedding bells could be heard the whole month of May at the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa with a record 109 weddings in just one month.

“It has been a very busy time for us,” wedding specialist Shayna Bigazzi told the fp. The resort is a favourite wedding spot for blissful nuptials, but “we have never had this many weddings in one month so far,” Bigazzi said.

Tulum, Mexico – New International Airport Planned

Dates of construction and completion were announced on April 15th 2010

After much speculation, the new Tulum airport project was officially launched by Mexican President, Felipe Calderon.

First news reports from CNN and Reuters said he started the bidding process to construct and operate the airport and the "bases" for the competition were published on April 15, 2010.

The project will need an investment of some $254 million and competitors are expected to include international investment consortiums and other airport operators.

Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon said that the Riviera Maya Airport will be the first in the country to be constructed by private investors under a concession scheme.

He said the new terminal forms part of an ambitious government infrastructure project. It will occupy 3,700 acres (1,500 hectares) on the edge of the Tulum real estate market and will have a capacity for up to 3 million passengers per year.

Potential bidders are thought to include: ASUR, operator of Cancun airport; OMA, operator of northern Mexican airports including Monterrey and Acapulco; OHL, one of Spain's largest construction companies; and Advent International, a private investment company.

Major public investment in the zone has already had an effect on the price of Tulum real estate and international property companies are rushing to build new projects along the Mexican Caribbean coastline.

Cancun today receives 12.6 million visitors annually, and it has no more space to grow. The Riviera Maya received 2.8 million visitors in 2009, but the government expects it to receive 17.9 million in 2025. The expansion will need greater airport capacity.

Clearly, the new airport wont be ready for new passengers arrivals for a few years, but when it does open, it will be a very welcomed alternative to flying into Cancun, and making the long bus ride down to the Tulum area.

Disabled Diving at Beaches Turks and Caicos

Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort Villages and Spa becomes the first to welcome disabled guests above and below the Turks & Caicos.

The dive team at the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort Villages and Spa has gone a step further to enable disabled guests by receiving their Handicap Scuba Association (HSA) certification this week. Under the guidance of recognized Course Director Mark Rausch of Poseidon Handicap Scuba Adventures, the team of 12 instructors underwent vigorous training in a three-day certification seminar to update their skills, which enables them to teach handicapped persons to scuba dive while addressing their special needs.

The course further offered insightful theory, followed by a series of confined and open water exercises, designed to simulate disabilities by ”acting out” the parts. This exercise created an atmosphere where instructors actually experienced what it is like to be a physically impaired diver. Rausch, who is also President and Founder of Poseidon Handicap Scuba Adventures and holds a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certification commented, “Scuba diving for the disabled is a reality,” he continued, “The HSA is empowering those for whom the physical, social and recreational enjoyment of diving might otherwise have been foreclosed.”

Michael Clark, Beaches Resorts Water Sports Manager, who was pleased that his department received this special training commented, “Scuba diving is the sports where gravity is not an issue,” he further stated, “we are delighted to be able to offer our disabled guests the full value of our ‟Luxury Included‟ facility including equal water sports opportunity that caters to their special needs.”

The Providenciales based dive shop is the first in the resort chain, as well as the Turks & Caicos to receive HSA certification training. With this new certification, resort instructors are now certified to train physically challenged individuals to dive.

The course included certification standards such special training considerations, lifting techniques, wet suit donning and paraplegic and quadriplegic training. Other training elements of the course included familiarizing instructors with psychological adjustment to disabilities such as spinal injury, traumatic brain injury, Cerebral Palsy, amputations, hearing and sight impaired, Multiple Sclerosis and Muscular Dystrophy. Handicap Scuba Association is made up of over 4000 underwater educators, with disabilities and supporting members, located in over 45 countries.

The handicapped Scuba Association is dedicated to insuring that the people with disabilities are given the same opportunities to receive quality training, certification, and dive adventures as every other dive enthusiast.

Norwegian Cruise Line announced a new partnership with Nickelodeon in which select Norwegian ships will feature Nickelodeon-themed family entertainment and programming all year long.

Beginning in April on Norwegian Jewel and this summer on Norwegian Epic, Nickelodeon and Norwegian experiences for the entire family will include character meet and greets, interactive game shows, character breakfasts and tuck-ins for kids. Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa reopened following four months of upgrades and renovations to the Luxury Included resort, on pace with original estimates set in August by Gordon “Butch” Stewart, chairman and founder of Sandals Resorts.

USA3000 to Add New Routes from Detroit

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) announced USA3000, which suspended service at Detroit in April, marks its return to DTW with its usual selection of sunny destinations. Flights to Cancun, Mexico and Ft. Myers, Fla., commence Nov. 21, 2009, just in time for Thanksgiving, and service to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, begins Nov. 29.

JetBlue Starts Nonstop JFK-Saint Lucia Service

JetBlue Airways has begun nonstop service to Saint Lucia's Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) from the airline's home at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Flights are every Monday, Thursday and Sunday, aboard by its 150-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. Onward connections to/from other U.S. cities are also available. To further celebrate the inaugural service, JetBlue is offering a special $129 sale fare each way for U.S.-originating travel between New York and Saint Lucia.

Cancun Airport Unveils New Runway, Control Tower Project

Island Breeze Travel of Michigan, a Certified Cancun Counselor, is happy to announce that the Cancun International Airport is unveiling its $67 million dollar investment, a second runway infrastructure project including the construction of an additional runway, entirely new control tower and taxiway bridge.

The airport's capacity will increase to be able to serve some 28 million passengers per year. The destination experiences a yearly increase in visitors.

In 2009, five airlines added Cancun to their flight schedules while other airlines, including American and Alaska Airlines, provide exceptionally low fares, creating demand for such an investment to accommodate visitors, especially during season.

Cancun's International Airport will become Mexico's first to have the capacity to handle simultaneous takeoffs and landings on two runways.

The control tower, more than 315 feet tall, will be among the 20 tallest in the world, allowing improved efficiency in runway-use time assigned to aircrafts, beneficial to both passengers and almost the 150 domestic and international airlines.
